About the concept of the project, artworks and the artist
As part of our experiments in creating new ceramic values, we worked with ceramic artist Itō Hidehito to create flat celadon works that retain a three-dimensional sensibility in their aesthetic formation.
In his production process, Itō used the classic methodology found in ancient East Asian art, striving obsessively not to diverge from those strictures. The resulting works are characterized by a fully 21st century expressive method with an internalized classic sensibility.
An aesthetic encapsulation of a massive expanse of history, celadon developed as an expression of the human heart moved by the natural world, its principles, its beauty. By firing this material in a flat, picture-like format, Itō set out to discover beauty not found within the ceramic vessel realm.
Using a smaller format to provide that sense of immersion in color found in 20th century Abstract Expressionism, Itō created focused works that convey their simple beauty without the need for verbal intervention.
