Art in all of its forms has been honed and perfected over the millennia. The immutable, fundamental principles of art run throughout that history. We team up with artists to create artworks that are updated, contemporary expressions rooted in that fundamental concept.
The Chinese Tang dynasty calligrapher Sun Guoting (648-703) noted "the ancient is timeless" in his Shu Pu treatise on calligraphy and art. Our artistic stance is revealed in that statement, aesthetics based on ancient techniques and knowledge, all while appropriately contemporary in sentiment. Ryusendo Gallery sets out to develop classically based, wholesomely beautiful projects by collaborating with all those who resonate with this stance.
The Ryusendo Gallery and our parent company Mayuyama & Co., Ltd. are housed in a building which was designed by Tohata Architects & Engineers and constructed by Kajima Corporation in 1960. The building exterior features black plaster and Yura stone, with some of the black plaster mixed with red iron oxide, and the Yura stone elements adroitly placed to highlight the rusty reddish areas. Our Ryusendo Gallery space was created by renovating the back of that structure. By introducing natural light through various adaptations to the existing structure, we have achieved our desired gallery with bright natural, not artificial, light. While natural sunlight's ultraviolet spectrum can harm some art forms, it is an essential factor in the full visual appreciation of an artwork's beauty. This is particularly the case with antique art, most of which was premised on being viewed in sunlight. The plastering used on our interior walls is a major feature of the gallery. The plaster was made with traditional methods, combining lime, linen and hemp fiber with adhesive made by rendering down water-reconstituted seaweed. This type of plaster purifies the space and aids our visitors as they relax and enjoy the artworks on display. The gallery's first and second floors are connected by an atrium-based spiral staircase and feature lovely, curved plaster walls. The third-floor skylight fills the open space with light. As the brightest of our gallery spaces, this third-floor gallery is particularly appropriate for the display of works easily influenced by light source differences. Visitors can enjoy viewing art works while drinking tea in the third floor's tea ceremony room.
